Field trip to Pou Mun Temple
Hong Kong Pou Mun Temple
On 24th Mar, we visited the Hong Kong Pou Mun Temple for volunteer service. At first, we were really nervous since we did not have so much experiences on serving the elderly and we did not know much about the culture of Pou Mun Temple. However, after the volunteer service, we all think that it was a very meaningful and great experiences and we learned a lot. On that day, we arrived at 10 am and we started to help the elderly to go upstairs to sit in the temple. We were amazed by the wonderful looking of the Pou Mun Temple. First, we saw the statue of Bodhisattva(觀世音菩薩). Bodhisattva also know as Lord Buddha(本尊菩薩) and is a very great god in Buddhism. It was really big and beautiful and we really enjoy looking at it. Also, we saw different statues such as Skanda(韋陀菩薩 ), it is also known as the Mahayana bodhisattva(護法菩薩) who is the guardian of Buddhist monasteries.

After Kai Chao Master introduced the history and the activities of the Pou Mun Temple, we started to distribute the food to the elderly. We need to have a great teamwork since there were about 500 elderly that day and we need to distribute to them quickly. Also, we need to help the elderly to walk upstairs and downstairs in order to prevent them from falling and get hurt. Although we were not really know how to help the elderly properly, the masters of the temple and the elderly were really nice and they smile to us a lot. After we helped all the elderly to leave the temple, we started to clean the temple and helped the masters to prepare for other activities. We helped them to move the chairs and helped them to distribute the books and tableware.

Although we are really tired about the volunteer service in Hong Kong Pou Mun Temple, we really think it was a meaningful activities. We learned many history of the temple and the different information about Buddhism, such as the Bodhisattva and Skanda. We also gained many experiences on how to serve the elderly and we were really happy that we can help them and made them happy.

I am Ho YingHei 11255985 from group 2 but unfortunately I was not able to attend this field trip. After reading your blog, I can know about the activity flow and what you have learned from this experience. Your blog is very detailed and attractive in describing your meaningful experience so this made me becoming interested in the activity. Thank you for your sharing.

回覆刪除Hello, I am Chan Pui Yee (Student ID: 11239967) from Buddhism Group 2. Thanks for your sharing. One day after your service, I and my groupmate, Harriet Hung, went to Hong Kong Pou Mun Temple, which is the 2nd round ceremonial lunch for the elderlies. Because of the volunteers helped on set up the chairs and table on 25th March, the 2nd round ceremonial lunch on 26th March could start up fluently. I think every volunteers effort and kindness is a treasure. Our cooperation help on the well-organized event and make everyone, like the volunteers, the temple staffs and the elderlies, all of us enjoy on the service and the result of the event. When I helped the elderlies to leave from the stairs, I heard a grandma said that she is happy as our help make her feel there are many kind people in the world. That impress me to do more volunteer work and serve the elderlies. For the details of the ceremonial lunch, the temple staff said that we can find the live video on Hong Kong Pou Mun Temple Facebook, so that the Buddhist who were busy for the work could join the ceremonial lunch together with the elderlies, in the office through the network.
